Back in Huaraz - le retour

3 days ago we set off at 6am (the town wakes up with the sun) on a 6 hour journey through Huascarán National Park and over the pass into a tiny village which charges you 5 soles for the priveledge of walking through it. Marks for initiative there. The views were breathtaking and the mountain roads breathtaking in quite another sense. I wish I had the words to describe it. The icy-blues of the lakes, the craggy mountain tops and snow capped peaks all bearing down on dusty paths and the odd cow standing stubbornly in the road.

The trek started off with a packed lunch (cheese sandwich, inevitably!) and a steep climb. We passed a collection of houses and the local children pounced on us. We soon learnt all they were after was ´un caramelo, señorita... un caramelito´. But a couple of them walked with us (showed us up! theyre obviously better acclimatized than us)

Unfortunately by the end of day one neither K nor I could cope with the thought of going any higher- the altitude was just too much. so day 2 was a defeated but beautiful trip back along the valley - aided by a local famer and his horse. I dont get on with horses.

So, we´re back in Huaraz. And off to a local museum after this. Today is 31 may- 39 years ago today there was a great earthquake that destroyed much of the region and is still visible as some towns are still recovering.

    C, this one´s for you -

There once was a horse that was grand.
It got too hot on the land.
So it went in the sea,
    Tipped off little me,
And galloped off over the sand.
