First a little context for those of you who have not visited this part of the world. In Nepal food is as follows:
Big lunch of daal bhat before school (9am)
Snack aka breakfast at 1.30 or 4 depending on whether you eat in or after school
Big meal (daal bhat again) at 7pm.
NB- if you call breakfast lunch or vice versa they get really confused, even after you've explained the order of meals in England. Equally if you mention dinner they think you are implying a 4th meal. I'm not sure why this is.
So at 1.30 yesterday the teachers motioned to me to follow them. After asking a few people, it transpired we were going for breakfast. As we walked across the field and out of the school gate towards a local eating place, I asked the teachers with alarm who was looking after the children (bearing in mind there are some as young as 4). Just the older children, it turned out. Noone saw anything problematic in this. In my overactive mind, children were choking on lunch or falling down the steep slopes on either side of the school building. But needless to say, we returned 20 minutes later and all was fine. Another moment where you realise you're far from the UK.
