Living

with a local family is a real insight into traditional village life. Ama (mam) is teaching me to cook Nepali food grown in her garden. Zero miles, organic and extremely tasty!

Oranges

Brother and sister. They can't be anything but. The boy draws my attention because he is squealing at his companion. His words are a tangled excitement of Andaluz... he's scolding her for being a devil and a nuisance. She's laughing. He's doing it in that beautiful way that only children can; the same voice they use when they look up at you, full of hope, and say, "Hi. I'm not ticklish. Please don't chase me!" and run off with a giggle. He yells at her again, "Don't do it! Stop it!" and falls about laughing as she bends down to scoop up an orange from the floor, ready to launch it at him once more. I pass by to the sound of their laughter. This is their kingdom. I notice how the tiny tiles which line the streets of Seville are scattered with shattered fruit. Perhaps it doesn't fall from the trees with such force after all.

It's story time kids. Coming up on May 12th is "ME awareness day"

[What's ME/CFS? Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: there are various names. For a quick summary of the condition, you can follow this link: about-me ] My story I remember being in 6th form college and my teacher said "Pick your head up off the desk! If you can’t stay awake in my class, go home." I had climbed a set of stairs to get to that classroom, having collapsed on them halfway up. I felt stunned. I was there, I was listening, I was even taking some of it in in my dizzy, fuzzy state. I said nothing in return because noone had named it ME back then, not even my doctor. I was told “it seems to be post-viral fatigue” and left to fend for myself. I could hardly walk, I slurred my words, I ached, sleep was never refreshing, I felt drunk ALL of the time without touching a drop (sounds way more fun than the reality - imagine feeling like that every waking moment and it not being in your control). I had gone from being full of life, a healthy 17/...

the last leg

Volcan Cotopaxi (5897m) Hey folks! well, ive had my last trad. Ecuadorian supper, my last kamikaze bus ride, my last glimpse of a volcano, my last moroche (must find the recipe. mmm.) And im all packed, by some miracle or other, into the 2 bags I came with. Im about to head to the airport (where they charge you an insulting 40 dollars to leave. ha.) And im planning on sleeping on the plane. Im currently recovering from some very high altitude and volcano climbing. which im awfully proud of. i'll put up photos soon :) those of you in the north of england... i'll see you soon!
